How the position of the engine influences driving

The position of the engine in a car affects the driving experience as it largely determines the dynamics of the vehicle.

Most mass-produced cars have the engine installed in the front. This is no coincidence, but responds to several factors ranging from the dynamics of the car itself to functionality and manufacturing costs. The position of the engine is closely linked to the car’s own configuration, mainly to the wheels that will be in charge of driving the vehicle.

For example, the development of a car with a front engine is easier and cheaper, while at the same time leading to more practical designs for users. First of all, they open up the possibility of having more spacious cabins, in addition to the fact that they are usually front-wheel drive or integral. Of course, there are front-engine, rear-wheel drive cars, but they are limited within manufacturers’ catalogs.

From the perspective of the average consumer, the benefits translate into more affordable prices, functional designs and, not least, a feeling of greater control. However, a performance-oriented view will always find greater advantages in cars with a mid or rear engine. Here are some notable differences in how a vehicle drives based on engine position .

Front engine cars

Traditionally, the engine has always been the heaviest component in the car. Its installation in the front part keeps the weight on the front wheels. Since the distance between the block and the wheels is very short, power losses in rotational systems and components are reduced.

A very common driving problem in front engine cars is that they tend to understeer. Car manufacturers and designers are aware of this situation, however, experts believe that understeer is safer and easier to correct for the average driver, especially when compared to an oversteer scenario. This happens when we take a curve at high speed and the turning radius is greater than that indicated by the steering wheel, as a result of the weight of the engine and its dynamics during braking.

Although they are not as much fun to drive, the position of the engine in this type of car also favors safety. This is due to the fact that there is a significant amount of material between a possible obstacle and the first row of the car.

mid-engined cars

Car brands are betting on a mid- engine when the priority is to boost performance and optimize features for sporty driving. By opting for this architecture, a better weight distribution is achieved, even in cases where it is distributed 50/50 between the front and rear. If we consider that the concentration of the weight of the engine at one end increases the chances of understeer or oversteer, mid-engined cars are the ones that best deal with this problem. Consequently, we have a more stable and safe driving.

It is worth mentioning that this position of the engine is closely linked to a low center of gravity. This is because the block mounted in this area radically limits body roll, contrary to what would happen if the load transfer associated with weight were higher. In this way, we do not see SUVs or trucks with a central engine, since the risk of rollover would be considerably high in certain maneuvers. In this type of car, the driver feels that the vehicle pushes with great conviction, while in one with a front engine, jerks are perceived if forceful and sudden accelerations are executed.

Rear engine cars

As its name indicates, these types of cars carry the engine just above the rear axle, in order to put all the weight on the rear tires and optimize traction. This is not only reflected in forceful acceleration, but also when decelerating. During the braking process, all the momentum is transferred to the front of the car, which will end up balancing the weight in this kind of manoeuvre.

In inexperienced hands or users who are not interested in sporty driving, oversteer will be a disadvantage and a risk. However, it is assumed that people who opt for such a drive configuration have a clear interest in sporty driving. Precisely, the ease of oversteer is ideal for skidding and drifting.

As we can realize, the position of the engine in a vehicle is a crucial factor that completely affects the driving experience. Depending on our interests and priorities, we will have to choose the one that best suits our needs. In the end, all configurations have advantages and disadvantages, but they are suitable for certain purposes.
