What does the engine do?
Each car’s engine converts fuel (petrol or diesel) so the vehicle can run. This is done by an internal combustion system. Internal combustion systems contain many parts, as well as the parts of the engine that are connected to the internal combustion system itself. There are two general types of engines, diesel engines and gas turbine engines.

The engine is made up of several components:
Spark Plugs – The spark plug’s job is to ignite the air/fuel mixture to start the internal combustion system.
Valves – The intake and exhaust valves are an important part of your engine. The intake valve allows air and fuel to enter the combustion chamber. After combustion, the resulting mixture passes through the engine and out the exhaust valve. The intake and exhaust valves close during the combustion process or engine ignition.
Cylinders and Pistons – The cylinder is the most important part of the engine with the piston floating in each cylinder. The most common are four, six or eight cylinder engines. The pistons are round and move up and down inside each cylinder.
Piston Rings – Every vehicle has a piston ring for each piston inside the cylinder. These rings prevent air and fuel from leaking into the engine crankcase during the combustion process.
Connecting Rod – This rod connects the piston to the crankshaft and rotates at both ends during the combustion process.
Crankshaft – The crankshaft helps turn the pistons up and down, like a hand-winding toy, like a crank in the box.
Sump – The crankcase completely covers the crankshaft and contains small amounts of oil to maintain flow.
Diagnose car engine problems
If you are unfamiliar with car engines and how they work, and believe you have engine problems, have your vehicle inspected and repaired by an experienced mechanic. For DIY mechanics, there are ways to diagnose problems with a car engine.
- Faulty Fuel – Many think this is a joke, but your engine may be experiencing a faulty fuel mixture clogging the intake valves. Check your engine’s intake valves to see if they are open and free of debris. It is not recommended to mix fuel with gaseous additives, it can also cause these types of problems. Rely on the type of fuel, oil, and additives recommended by the operator’s or technician’s manual.
- Lack of Compression – If the air and fuel are not compressed properly, the combustion process that ignites the engine will not work. Check your piston rings and see if they look worn. Inspect your intake and exhaust valves and make sure they are properly sealed. You may even have a hole in one of your cylinders.
- No Spark – If your engine won’t start or won’t start, one cause could be a bad spark plug or bad spark plug wire. Check them and replace them when you see corrosion. If any spark plug wires are broken or snapped, the spark plug wires should be replaced. Spark plugs work accurately. If they go out too early or too late, the internal combustion process won’t work, so it’s important to keep your spark plugs and wires in top condition.
- Engine Cooling System – The cooling system is made up of many parts, including the pressure cap, radiator, cooling lines, fan, and water pump. All of these components need to be replaced from time to time to ensure proper engine operation and eliminate engine failure.
- Other engine problems: You may have a bad battery and need a new one. The bearings that turn the crankshaft may be worn. If you run out of engine oil, you can not only burn out the engine, but it probably won’t start.

The most important thing to keep in mind is not to try to fix the engine yourself if you don’t understand a car engine. Even if you are successful in diagnosing problems with a car engine, most engines these days are tuned and wired to computers that help them run.
